Following the sun: shining the light on Aboriginal mental health- 3 March 2021

Following the sun: shining the light on Aboriginal mental health- 3 March 2021

Youth Health Forums (YHFs) are stimulating, half-day forums that cover a wide range of adolescent health and wellbeing issues, appealing to health, education, community, welfare professionals and students. The Forum provides an opportunity for attendees to meet, update knowledge and skills, exchange information and strengthen the youth health network, in order to provide the best possible support for young people in NSW.

Although it’s challenging to host face to face meetings at this unusual time, the YHF Organising Committee recognises the value of extending YHFs to those working with young people both in Sydney and rural and regional areas; the scheduled March 2021 Forum will once again be live streamed to individuals to keep everyone safe. Note that there will be no video conferences held at the usual rural and regional sites.

The NSW State of Volunteering Survey is open and we want to hear from you!

The NSW State of Volunteering Survey is open and we want to hear from you!

The Centre for Volunteering, along with the Department of Communities and Justice, is excited to be producing the first State of Volunteering Report for NSW.

Your responses will directly shape the future of volunteering in NSW.

We want to hear from all young people (12-24), even if you don’t or can’t volunteer; your answers are important. Your answers will help us to understand what motivates you to volunteer, and what the barriers are that stop you from volunteering.

As a young community member you may be volunteering, without even knowing. Tell us about how and why you help others.

Be part of this exciting opportunity and complete the survey by 5 March 2021. Share the link to the survey with your friends and peers!

New research on youth gambling (NSW)

New research on youth gambling (NSW)

A study commissioned by the NSW Office of Responsible Gambling has found almost 30 per cent of young people surveyed had gambled in the past year.

The NSW Youth Gambling Study 2020 investigated the gambling attitudes and behaviours of young people aged 12-17 through focus groups and an online survey of over 2,200 people. Director of the Office of Responsible Gambling, Natalie Wright, said in the past year 29.8 per cent of participants had gambled, with informal private betting the most common, followed by scratchies and lotteries.

The research showed relatively few young people gambled alone with gambling usually happening with a parent or another adult relative, Ms Wright said.
