The focus of this panel discussion is delivering quality and culturally responsive telehealth services to people from culturally and linguistically diverse populations, through the pandemic and beyond.

COVID-19 quickly thrust us into using telehealth (phone, online and video consultations) which has resulted in a range of great benefits as well as numerous issues, particularly for this hard to reach population.

A panel will discuss lived experience and use expert knowledge to explore and unpack the issues and provide practical strategies to achieve best practice. There will also be time to answer audience questions.

This webinar is free to attend and is aimed at health service providers wishing to improve capacity, capability, and confidence in this area. It may also be of interest to health consumer representatives.

Free Sim cards for young people and families to access healthcare via telehealth (confirm by 31 Aug 2020)

Opportunity via the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network, to access free Optus SIM cards for

families and young people that do not have the technology to access healthcare via

telehealth.

Numbers are limited and will need to be confirmed with Mel by Monday 31st October.

Each sim cards will:

  • have 10 GB of data every 42 days
  •  have free calls and texts for up to 12 months
  • will need to be activated within 6 weeks of receiving them.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, 9 August

 Theme: COVID-19 and indigenous peoples’ resilience

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, 9 August – The day was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1994 to promote the protection and rights of Indigenous people and celebrate indigenous people’s culture and achievements all around the world.

While the exact origins of COVID-19 have not yet been confirmed, the link between environmental damage and pandemics is well known to leading research organizations. But there is yet another group of experts, who have been worrying about the threat of a pandemic even before COVID-19: indigenous peoples. Thanks to their traditional knowledge and their relationship with the natural world, they have long known that the degradation of the environment has the potential to unleash disease.

The International Day observance will take place on Monday, 10 August 2020 from 9 am to 11 am in a virtual event.

The virtual event’s theme is “COVID-19 and indigenous people’s resilience” and will feature an interactive panel discussion with several guest speakers.

#Itest4NSW – NSWHealth encouraging young people to get tested for COVID19

Young people aged 18 – 35 years have the highest rate of COVID-19 infection. They’re busy, social people who may not be engaged with our usual communications channels.  Although most young people who get COVID-19 won’t become seriously unwell, they may easily spread it to family, friends and workmates.

It’s important that more people in this age group are tested.

NSWHealth is encouraging young people to get tested through filming and posting social media content with the hashtag #Itest4NSW answering the question “Why did you get tested?”.   NSWHealth is asking partner organisations to spread the word.

Regional Kiki will be held online via Zoom, with sessions commencing in August.

Beyond Blue have created a dedicated coronavirus wellbeing support line.

o    The free 24/7 Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Support Service –coronavirus.beyondblue.org.au or via phone on 1800 512 348 – has been developed by Beyond Blue to address the growing mental health impact of the pandemic, including fear about the virus, financial stress, business closure, family stress, anxiety and loneliness.

o    The service offers easy access to a broad range of practical supports from online wellbeing tips, self-help tools to phone counselling from trained mental health professionals and peer to peer support.

RentChoice Assist COVID19 Response

As you may know, the NSW Government provided $20 million in additional funding for RentChoice Products to support people into the private rental market and to assist people having difficulty paying rent as result of the pandemic.

Rent Choice Assist COVID-19 can provide rent support to low income renting households at risk of homelessness that have had their income significantly impacted by COVID-19 and need some assistance to either maintain their tenancy or access affordable accommodation in the private rental market.

At this stage, this arrangement is due to end on 30 July (though it is possible it will be extended) so services are encouraged to ensure that clients are making applications ASAP.

‘Super Rough Seas’ Community Recovery Art Project

Hello Northern Rivers Community,

You are invited to participate in the ‘Super Rough Seas’ Community Recovery Art Project. The project is bringing together our stories and experiences of COVID-19 in a Street Art Story Montage in the Northern Rivers. The work will be a visual storytelling of our communities’ compounded lived experiences through the challenging times of the COVID-19, recent fires, drought and floods. Super Rough Seas will explore our narratives around how we may all be in the same ocean during these challenging times but our boats are all different shapes and capacities, as well as offering a visual dialogue of hope as we create images for our visions for the future.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE // NORTHERN RIVERS COMMUNITY ARTWORK OPEN CALL

Community members of all ages and abilities from around the Northern Rivers are invited to submit images of their artworks/drawings/sketches created during or in a reflection of the isolation period of COVID-19 as well as artworks in relation to the recent fires, drought, floods, social justice/ injustice and climate change. The artworks will be photo-shopped & collaged together and then printed to produce a large scale street art story montage paste-up to be installed in a public space in our community (we are on the hunt for a suitable large wall if you have one and would like to be part of the project).

The project is about connection in our community and making sense of our personal and shared experience through art. Wonderfully supported by Arts Northern Rivers.
