A colourful rainbow of young people from across the Tweed, Byron and Southern Gold Coast regions marched down the main street of Tweed Heads late last year for the Tweed/ Cooly Diversity Walk 2020. This COVID-safe event was organised and run by the young people of Q*Network and the headspace Tweed Heads Youth Advisory Group.

Diversity Walk is an annual event celebrating pride and safety for LGBTIQAP+ young people in our local communities. Thirty young people (the maximum allowable under current restrictions) marched with family members, community, Tweed Byron Police, ACON, Queer Family and Social Futures staff, receiving unanimous and enthusiastic support from onlookers and shoppers in the form of car horns and cheering.  Diversity Walk 2020 was livestreamed on Instagram for the first time and the comments lit up during and after the event. ‘Thank you headspace, this was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had with my lgbtq+ family,’ commented one young person. ‘ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!! I loved being there today LOUD AND PROUD!!!’ said one of the parents. For more photos and a video of the walk check out and follow the headspace Tweed Heads Instagram and Facebook pages.

After the walk, everyone gathered for an informal picnic and sharing circle, with special rainbow cupcakes provided by Bee and Maria fundraising for the new Byron Rainbow Youth Group (see article below). Organisers said it was so affirming to see young people from all over Tweed Shire get involved, along with a groups from Byron Bay and the Gold Coast.

Huge thanks to our organising committee of Bee Lester, Alanah Still, Josh Walsh, Tobin from ACON and Aiden from Queer Family. We’ll keep you posted for our upcoming Diversity Walk 2021 – scheduled for Pride Month in June 🙂
