Even before COVID-19 hit, there was a hidden pandemic impacting thousands of Australians – loneliness.
Far from being benign, the impact of loneliness can be more dangerous than smoking, with effects ranging from mental health, poorer cardiovascular functioning, a faster rate of cognitive decline – all of which can lead to premature death.
While COVID-19 has exacerbated loneliness, there is hope and a number of ways the community and governments can work together to overcome this pandemic.
