If you are feeling the rental squeeze, you are not alone. And there’s a reason why. The Northern Rivers is still the second tightest rental market in the state according to the latest June 2019 figures from REINSW.
The average monthly rental vacancy rate for the Northern Rivers over the 12 months to June 2019 was 1.3%. After Murrumbidgee (1.1%), Northern Rivers was the second lowest of all regions surveyed, and much tighter than Sydney (3.2%), Newcastle (2.0%) and Illawarra (2.3%).
With such tight demand, households on the minimum wage or income support are being excluded from the rental market.
Social Futures CEO Tony Davies says limited affordable housing options combined with low levels of social housing are the biggest barrier to preventing and resolving homelessness for many families and households in the Northern Rivers.
