Support services have told researchers that the coronavirus pandemic has led to increased referrals for technology-facilitated abuse — a form of violence that ranges from abusive texts and social media posts to covert stalking and child exploitation.

A team led by Monash University researcher Asher Flynn is examining the prevalence of technology-facilitated abuse in Australia and will release a research report on Wednesday.

According to the report, seen by the ABC, domestic and family violence support services “overwhelmingly” reported an increase in referrals “due to clients being pushed into crisis situations while also being trapped in the home with their abuser due to lockdown requirements”.
