COVID-19 has emerged as the number one issue facing young Australians today, with new research from Mission Australia shows the pandemic has had a major impact on youth mental health.
Why are young people so concerned? Young Australians surveyed for Mission Australia’s latest youth survey said the pandemic has limited their participation in activities, while negatively impacting their education and mental health. Respondents outlined how their anxiety had been “heightened by a constant state of the unknown”, with some noting lockdowns had weakened their friendships. While COVID-19 was the top national issue identified, this year’s survey also revealed that coping with stress and mental health were the top issues of personal concern for young people. Four in 10 young people said that they felt stressed either all of the time or most of the time.
